Can anyone identify purpose of this device?

No, the potentiometers had different purposes (one was just a volume control going to the LM386). The MOD lettering is where a supplier name is normally placed e.g the switches have 'RS' (RS Components) marking in that placement. It was a bit tongue in cheek from me but the UK MOD does have its own supplier 'Defence Electronics & Components Agency'.

A typical hand-held metal detector does not have 2 BNC connectors. This looks like a CSD analyzer. It requires 2 probes to compare the signals. If it did not have the 2 BNC connectors, I'd be positive it was just a metal detector. IMHO.

Reevaluating based on the size of the filters, I would say it is sub-microwave but UHF at least. Measuring the stripline filters in the LO part wold probably get pretty close for that part but I don't know enough to do it unfortunately.

Can you tell me, in LAYMANS terms exactly what a CSD analyzer is used for?

I've emailed Shahriar ('The Signal Path' on Youtube ) who is pretty expert in looking at these type of oscillating blocks... hoping he replies but not holding my breath.

OK, it is "a diviner" , and that could be any of a number of things. The link in post#86 describes a number of possibilities. Silent Line tracer coo mind.

How does a non linear junction detector work?
The NLJD antenna head is a transceiver (transmitter and receiver) that radiates a digital spread spectrum signal to determine the presence of electronic components. When the energy encounters semi-conductor junctions (diodes, transistors, circuit board connections, etc.), a harmonic signal returns to the receiver.

WOW! I am impressed indeed. A transmitter detector that detects the transmitter, no the signal. Really sneaky! So now we know what the thing is, or could be. It probably detects receivers as well. Quite a thing indeed. It should also be able to detect good semiconductors and failed ones.

Answering your question speciifically: A Cross Spectral Density (CSD) tester is used to compare signal power distribution specifically- in other words, if you have 2 different signals on a spectrum, will one of them influence the other. It can be used to find mutual resonant frequencies in the pair of signals, to show how they are statistically correlated.

I haven't caught up on other responses yet- it could be something else, but... who knows?

In the apparent abscense of any technical documentation, I would be tempted to wind and attach one of the dual coil type detection heads found in a few DIY Metal detectors out there and see what happens, at this point, what is there to lose!!
Just a few turns (18t) of enameled wire for each. 20g etc..
Plus head-phones!

In the simplest terms, the deviner seems to be a device for detecting radio transmitters or receivers nearby, even if they are not active at the time. It may also be able to detect wired electronics nearby and trace hidden wires that are not active.
The exact mechanism for being able to do that is not totally clear to me, in any detail.

Welcome to AAC. Glad you joined us and I hope you stick around.

All or nearly all of this Information is in the thread, I know it's hard to slog through a long thread but it pays to at least scan for hints that you are repeating what has already been said.

But people who have obscure specialist information can be very valuable in this place where the questions don't have any known limit on subject matter (within the rules, of course, but that still leaves room for enough obscurity to occasionally stump the corporate us.

So I suggest that it is one of those tools that you may need later on, in a few years, if you stay in the technical fields. If not, with an adequate description to go with it, the device should sell to the person who understands it and has a use for it, returning many times what you paid for it.

So I suggest that it is one of those tools that you may need later on, in a few years, if you stay in the technical fields. If not, with an adequate description to go with it, the device should sell to the person who understands it and has a use for it, returning many times what you paid for it.
I've always thought that this was a high end, and initially, a very expensive piece of kit. However, it has to be acknowledged that the original owner/company disposed of it to a scrap/salvage company (presumably for a very low price) for a reason. I believe that reason to possibly be that the probes(s) were lost/damaged and were no longer available. I am not interested in making any money for the device (the briefcase it came with it is worth 3 times more than £25 I paid in total and actually the device enclosure was all I originally bought the device for!). After receiving the device I was simply fascinated with what the initial uses of the device were and was in awe of the work that had gone into construction. I am grateful to all the contributors to my opening post and have almost lost count of the number of suggestions for possible purpose! (I think it was an underground cable detector). I will probably keep the aluminium RF part intact in case I ever get a reply from Shahriar ('The Signal Path') but will re-use the main enclosure, switches, potentiometers etc since there is nothing about these parts that could allow the device be readily recreated (I've got plenty of photos) if someone could identify a use for it and source the appropriate probes.

I would be tempted to at least wind a couple of 20t 12" coils and see if it works as a dual coil Treasure Hunter (metal detector) project
