My fiance is an electrical engineer and really wants to make projects at home and has been wanting a power supply for a while. His birthday is coming up, but I do not know as much about this topic as he does. Can you give me suggestions on a really good power supply I could purchase? Any suggestions?

You don't need much of a power supply to do most things. I power most of my circuits from a variable 3-15V @ 150mA supply that has a lot of ripple. Or wall warts.

If he's any good, he can whip up a power supply with parts on hand. Or use wall warts/laptop supplies from a thrift store for $4-10.

 

Sometimes things like this work out best when you just go ahead and discuss with him what he would actually want. Rather than guess my wife generally just ask me.

My Wife bought me a cordless string trimmer for Fathers Day. The line was so wimpy that I told her it wouldn't cut anything and I'd just use my gas trimmer that can use beefier line. She thought it would be lighter (easier on my back) than my gas trimmer, but I told her the slick line would take forever to cut anything and it would just fray the grass I trimmed and turn the tips brown.

Naturally she bought it online and it cost $40 to send it back.

I did keep the cordless pole pruner. It's getting harder for me to use my chainsaw (gas) on a ladder and I can only get so high with my electric Black and Decker Alligator lopper.

A relay did fail in it some time ago but it was an easy fix. It has seen a real lot of use for some years now.
