hi same here i'm working on with my power supply giving a 5v output. the transformer that I used was 220v primary 12v-0-12v 3a, the rectifier I used was 1n5408 then the capacitors after the rectifier were 1000uF and 0.33 uF after that 7805 (though it can only carry 1a I give it a try) then 0.1uF. what went wrong? though when I tested it 7805 didn't heat up but later on I noticed that the rectifier heats up and I saw smoke. Good thing nothing blows up.

Don't see anything wrong with the schematic, or what I can make out from the breadboard (except the small caps should be ceramic).

Your breadboard doesn't have the transformer connections.
