board to board wiring

Hello folks,
I have a stupid problem... (aren't they all?)
Am using two development boards, one is an MCU board and other is RFID board. Both have 2.54mm spaced male pin headers. I need to connect these boards with about 36" of wiring (4 wires). I can't for the life of me, find the female headers and pin connectors that I thought would be available to make my own cable connection. On Digikey I found some Harwin components: M20-1060400, M20-1180046
Anybody solve a similar problem? What did you use?

What did you use?
DuPont jumpers from AliExpress (one of the items I'll buy from them). $0.03/jumper, free shipping.

Regarding AliExpress. Be very careful about what you buy. Many (most?) Sellers know nothing about what they're selling and descriptions can be wrong; sometimes even describing a different product. Most Sellers are reluctant to give you even a partial refund. AliExpress arbitration people are equally clueless; if you buy a product that is not as advertised, it's unlikely that you'll get any satisfaction unless it's clearly a counterfeit.

Since many items include free shipping in low quantity, I buy in low quantity.

Jameco sells a similar product for $4.95 ($0.12/jumper), plus shipping:

Manufacturer is called ZipWire.

If you want custom configurations, header blocks, pins, and crimper are also available at low cost from AliExpress. But, it's a PITA to make them up...

OK folks, thanks for so many replies!
My key requirement is to span 36 inches between the boards... standard jumper wires are much too short. I already have a bag of the Sparkfun jumpers that I'm using on the bench. If I could build some 36-inch length jumper wires just like them, that would do it. Can't find the single female connectors anywhere.

The Molex connectors are similar to what I found on Digikey (Harwin) - I kind of prefer these and will probably just make them work.

And no, I'm not going to google "single female bored connectors". Feel free to use that line in a Digikey live chat session and let me know what you get.

With 1m long connections you could run into ringing, noise and interference problems.
You would have to make your own cable using twisted pairs, i.e. signal and ground wires twisted as a pair.

Just use the short jumpers you have. Cut it in half and extend the wire and put heat shrink over the joints.

Ah hah! Thanks.
The header block link I posted has 1-5 pin headers. They also come in larger widths, but crimping is a PITA.

If anyone knows of a tool for easily removing connector pins, I'd like to hear about it. I currently use a thin strip of metal from a security tag...

Looking for something like this:

Yep, this is exactly what I'm doing (twisted pair, shielding, ...).
Might switch to CAN in order to avoid these issues, but I need to get a prototype running...

I would use IDC connectors and ribbon cable for a long run and something simple to build. The cables ends can be assembled with pliers or I like to use a vice and the give you a double row of 0.1 inch pins. You can either buy sockets or just use pin strips.

Something like this:

Digi Key (among others) sells these either in complete assemblies or you can get the connectors and cable and build your own to custom lengths.

You could also consider using shielded ribbon cable.

One possibility is to use a shielded IDE cable. In addition to flat, there are the round ones used by Gamers to beautify their computers.

I have some of these connectors and over 36 inches of multiconductor ribbon cable # 28 wire. I would be glad to build the cable for you and mail it to you if you would like.640623-4, 3-640623-4_sml (1).jpg
I have the tool to install the wire. This connector is 4 female contacts 2.54mm spacing.
Please let me know, Ned
