This weekend I helped a young beginner get started with an Arduino project. He wanted to use a switched mode power supply to power it so I delved into my collection and took out one I thought would do the job. Mains in 12 volts out at 2 Amps. The input socket had an earth pin which was connected to the output negative pin, indicating that the output would not be "floating" (fully isolated) which made me consider the risks in using such a power supply and maybe attaching test equipment to anything powered by it. Being lazy, I did a quick online search and found this article which explains it all. Well worth watching!

For my own workshop, I use a safety mains isolation transformer which I consider to be the safest way when working on live mains powered equipment.
