Better choice than TDA2002 for low power audio amp?

One of the online electronic suppliers is offering two TDA2002s for $2. The data sheet says this is an obsolete audio amplifier chip. I know that obsolete means no longer manufactured, but does it also mean a better chip is available? If so what?

Would I gain efficiency with a more recent design? Lower parts count? Better sound? Anything else?

The chip seems well suited for my purpose but if, in practice, it is hard to use I don't want to fight with it.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks Dave, but all those have, from my standpoint, problems which the TDA 2002 does not have. Most are more, far more, powerful than I need. Some are surface mount which I can't use. The others have three times as many pins and an increased parts count to boot.

Is there a specific reason you would avoid the TDA 2002

The TDA2030/50 in my opinion is a good power amplifier for loud sounds, like tv surround sound systems but lacks tone and quality compared to others.

Dave, thanks. If I needed that extra power I'd us that. But I don't. You have hinted ("would stay away from") that there is a weakness to the TDA 2002. If it is only because you want more power that is one thing, but if you know something weak about it--or even have had a bad experience with one--could you please explain what it is.

Five watts, heck .5 watts is probably enough, but I'm not sure enough about .5 watts to just build one.

This has five pins, needs only 6 common caps and 4 common resistors.

Ok then try the LM386 for 1W power.

The LM386 gives a maximum of 0.66W with a 12V supply and gets hot. It gives horribly distorted 1W when it is clipping like crazy.
The TDA7052 and TDA7052A are obsolete and are not made anymore. Digikey has none in stock.

hi, i have a tda7297 hooked to a 9v supply and it sounds great. with nice details and dynamics to the tone. it also works down to 6.5v & up to 18v.

but if you want to use the same board and want exact pin replacement, i guess there are tda2003 available in market, if not originals, at least chinese clones. but they sound kinda bland.

or if you want a small chip, then the obsolete & fake tda2822 is there. it sounds sweet but blows itself up with loads lower than 8ohms.
