My observation is that often there may be some color code within a specific model and year, but not even within a given manufacturer. And wires with color stripes sounds like a connection code within a specific system, such as radio or door locks. So you need a meter.
If the connections are for speakers it is important to not connect either one to anything else, such as the chassis or even another speaker lead.

 

When working with automotive electrical systems I have generally obtained the shop service manuals, they show all the wire details and colours.

Actually it was!
Before they caught it, the XJS had rubber hoses on the motor to the fuel injectors that after some time could rupture.
It was an insurance right-off, it was quite the challenge to rebuild.
