Yep - When it comes to earthquakes and volcanoes, Indonesia is the worst of the worst.

Krakatoa was one of the biggest volcanic explosions on record and there will probably be another big blast sometime in the future. However, scientists don't know when it will actually occur, and the casinos in Vegas aren't taking bets on it either.

I just hope it's not Bali. It was a jewel on the ocean almost 40 years ago when we sailed up that chain of islands.

Hawaii may be the world's capital for volcanoes and I ran across this video of the 1955 eruption of Kilauea on the southern coast of the Big Island:

The part where the lava starts to appear from a small hole was in the backyard of a resident who lived on the Kamoamoa Fissure. According to the history of this film, the guy set up a movie camera and filmed the first 24 hours of the eruption before the lava flow burned his home.

Kinda gives you a case of the hives when you think about someone living right on top of a volcano wannabee.

I think Mt. St. Helens (ca. 1980) in Washington State was pretty spectacular. Mt. Rainier could be next and it would be goodbye for Seattle. Let's not forget the Yellowstone Caldera. If that one goes the Western US can kiss it's collective behind goodbye.

Yellowstone is similar to Kilauea in Hawaii because the cause of the volcanic activity is a so called "mantel plume" which delivers enormous amounts of energy from the mantel/outer core boundary.

This type of volcano is especially dangerous because it can flood 1000s of square miles with basaltic lava. I believe lava from Yellowstone has been found as far away as western Texas.

From what I've read......Hawaii is just heartburn and Yellowstone is a heart attack. It's the volume of ejecta.....that's the killer.

Yellowstone can coat the entire west and much of the east in many feet of ash.

Hawaii is out in the middle of the Pacific so Kilauea can erupt to its heart content without causing any damage. In fact, the lava flows just add more land to the island so there's more real estate for future generations who might be around in 500,000 years.

However, Yellowstone is right smack in the north western US and the lava will add more land OVER what's already there!!! o_O
