No, diodes will not work.
You don't need zeners anyway. You can omit D1 and D2.

Don't forget a common ground between the programmer and the device being programmed.

You shouldn't need SS pin hooked up on the target. It may be using SS on the host to drive RESET on the target. The programmer I use just has MISO, MOSI, SCK, RESET, VCC, GND. SS is needed for SPI in slave mode but programming is a special mode.

 

where should the diodes be connected??..before or after the 68 ohm resistor??should they be connected with D- and D+ Pins of usb connector??

 

Leave out the diodes.

MOSI and MISO must be crossed.

 

MOSI of atmega16 is pin no 6 which is connected with MOSI of atmega8 which is pin no 17..what is the mistake??..

 

Connect MOSI of ATmega16 to MISO of Atmega8
and MISO of ATmega16 to MOSI of Atmega8
(I think).
