The diodes are a standard option, not always clearly specified. Proper layout will prevent problems.

 

One of my most frequent uses for those relays is switching the 12 volt power for trailer lights, so that the lights control module does not get upsetat the much greater current draw. In that application the existing 12 volt lights certainly can handle the small coil kickback voltage, sincethat corcuit already has a shunt resistance.
