Audio Switcher

The switch will probably become intermittent in a few months or years if it is rated for AMPs. A high current switch uses silver plated contacts that tarnish (go black) which stops low voltages and low currents.
Since you are switching high currents (speakers) and low currents (headphones) then you need a switch that has wiping contacts.

I really doubt that the current from a low powered amplifier is "high". And the last few of those switches that I have seen the insides of would work well for both logic and a few hundred mA.. So my guess is that the first part to fail will be the headphone jack.

hi agu,
The TS is using the same audio line set-up and switch as I have used for about 10 years, without any problems.

Give it another ten to fifteen years and that headphone jack will show some wear, IF you unplug the phones whenever you stop listening. I did not say the failure would be soon, but that it would be first. Those switches are quite durable.

For switching low level audio they make switches with gold plated contacts, the switches cost the same as the ones made for high current and have silver plated contacts. The gold plated switches are said "for dry circuits".

After having made it, I have been flipping the switch about 6 times a day. (I usually use my speakers for watching videos, music, and the headphones for games, music/audio work, and when I need to keep things quiet).

It works really well, there's no interference, but I'm really grateful for the information about the switches. If this switch fails on me, I will definitely get a gold plated one!

When I bought it, I just happened to be in a store that had a few, and had thought it must have been possible to make something that would allow me to switch between headphones and speakers instead of constantly plugging/unplugging the cables, so I bought it (it was near enough the price Amazon was asking).

I did actually end up flipping the wires so now it switches the way I intended in the first place. Embarrassingly, I actually made that change because I soon realised (this happened when I was playing a game where audio plays a significant role) that the left and right channels were also wired the wrong way around, so I also flipped them too.
Here's my shoddy soldering!

It's funny to think it started as this:

Thanks again!

Here's another update :)

It still works perfectly fine! I have not been flipping the switch as often as before, but it still functions as intended.
