By the term "stabilize", I mean that the collector feedback resistor minimizes changes in the amplifier's gain due to variations in beta due to temperature as well as variations of beta that occur between different transistors bearing the same part number.

Collector feedback also lowers the output impedance and input impedance of the amplifier, so it can be used to control these. If you include capacitors or inductors in the feedback circuit, you can also control bandwith. If you include nonlinear elements, you can make things like log, exponential, or multiplier circuits.
