You need to got to school or at least an online course. You are not going to learn engineering by someone telling you about it on a forum. Some universities offer free courses. You will need to look around.

You can go to the website of any school offers computer engineering and get their program of study for that degree. Then you can get the official course descriptions for each of the courses. You can then go to the bookstore's site and get the current textbook being used. At some school's, you may be able to access the individual course webpages and get the specific reading and homework assignments. There are also numerous free courses online that you can take to cover many of the topics.

It will require a huge amount of determination and self-discipline on your part to work your way through it all. But even if you do, at the end of the day you will not have a degree at all, not even one from a non-accredited institution. So it will become very difficult for you to get someone to hire you. You may be able to make a living via self-employment.

A better route would be to get hired by a tech company, even if it is doing non-tech work, and use their educational benefit program to take courses toward an accredited degree. In the process, work your way into a technical position at the company.

My advice: Get to know people in the software industry and ask them for a job. ;)

In the beginning, programming was just a hobby of mine. After I had honed my skills over a number of years I eventually decided to look for work by approaching friends in the field. That's how I got started. No formal education, no certifications, nothing but a willingness to learn whatever is necessary in order to get the job done. Degrees are nice. They can certainly improve your chances of finding employment. But being highly competent at what you do and knowing someone who can help get your foot in the door? Invaluable.

As far as what to study, start by searching for tutorials on a variety of programming languages. Visit your local bookstores. And of course, practice, practice, practice. In case you have trouble thinking up problems to solve, check out Project Euler.

Version control systems are important too, so you might want to learn how to use tools like git, mercurial, and subversion as well.

Keep in mind that the TS is asking about learning computer engineering, not computer programming. Why it is in the Programmer's Corner forum is, admittedly, anyone's guess.

Oh right!

Well, even so, still applicable is the fact that proficiency and connections in a field can often be way more useful than a mere piece of paper (although it definitely helps if you have all three). :)
