Anyone remember the Johnson Smith mail order catalog?

Did you mean J.C. Whitney? They're still around, after multiple bankruptcies through the years. There was also a Polish auto parts catalog that was practically identical to J. C. Whitney's catalog, but their name escapes me. J. C. Whitney is still around and has a website.

I discovered what I was thinking of had advertisements placed in Boy's Life and Popular Mechanics, and while it looked like you could get a jeep, it was a how-to scam -- info on buying Gov't surplus that the Government would provide to you for no cost!

Here is an interesting article with photos of an actual jeep in a crate, Jeeps being built, crated, and a vast Jeep graveyard in Okinawa:

Way off topic but... Are you Wuchter (spelling may be incorrect) from Avionics Class around 1985 in Millington, TN?

It used to mean No Discount i.e. the particular quantity and packaging option for the parts you were ording didn't qualify for normal quantity discounts that otherwise might apply. I imagine that they no longer use the same discount structure as in the old days so everything is -ND.

Correct.

The reason I bring that up is that Digikey used to sell from a pulp catalog they'd mail out periodically. Digikey started out selling some amount of surplus and closeout electronic parts. Most of them were discounted, especially when you purchased large quantities. These items did not have the -ND at the end of the part number.

In any case, the mention of the Johnson Smith catalog triggered my memories of the Digikey catalog. In those days, I'd save up my allowance to buy LED's, transistors, IC's and other parts.

I know they were just south of me so I always thought it stood for North Dakota origins, but since found out they are next door in Minnesota!
I still have my hard copy, BTW.!
