Analog Output/Input Required for Project

As a part of a university project, I am attempting to send a specific frequency into a container, and read its echo. I am looking at using an arduino for the project, but I'm not too sure what sensors/outputs I would use to send/receive the signal.
If any clarification is needed please ask, and any help would be appreciated, thanks!

What does "read its echo" mean? Are you sensing the depth of the container, like a liquid level sensor? What is the container made of?

it's a metal beer keg, and yes effectively just checking whether it is below a certain fill threshold. My intention is to produce the signal and then record its echo time, as well as (hopefully) log the returned waveform.
