Do you mean that so long as I buy I licensed music from a licensed dealer, I can already broadcast it on air? I thought I need a separate license from the one who made the song

Yes if your using pop music or stuff like Beyonce's "Mamma got a big ole ass" you would need to pay royalty fees each time you play it to I think its BMG? BGI? or someone like that, or Sony. Pretty much 2 companies hold the rights to 99% of the modern music out there. Now you can also play independent music or some jam bands like the grateful dead, phish, MMW, and others encourage the recording and playing of their music and charge no fee's. Then you have royalty free music which is not actually free, but you buy the music with unlimited rights on how much you can use it. You can't sell it. But you can use the disc over and over. You can get lots of instrumentals, sound effects, etc.. The fee's paid from online stations are different and cheaper then the ones paid from commercial stations. Many online stations don't have to pay at all if the have a small listener base. I would contact one of the talk show ones and call in and talk to someone about the specifics of setting up a shoutcast stream or justin.tv stream to start your radio station. Then start collecting sound effects and leadins' and stuff. Then start making all your stuff for station to practice. Online radio still has a lot of growth available I feel.
