How does altitude affect the performance of a transformer? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

 

What is the major difference in the environment of a transformer at sea level and a transformer at 4,000m (assume it's in a building and that the room temperature is the same in both places)?

 

the difference should be the pressure.....i guess

 

and pressure on a gas changes its______.

 

And as the pressure drops, does the air get less dense or more dense?

Take it to an extreme. What impact would it have on transformer performance if it were operated in a vacuum?

 

Ah! i got it....#12 pressure on a gas changes its density. WBahn that is really an extreme! Am guessing it would overheat due to the absence of air. meaning a transformer would overheat at high altitudes....? cool!

 

No...warm

This is a good method for a lot of problems. Set up a mental spectrum from way "this" to way "that" and when you realize what the extremes are you can settle somewhere in the middle with the right answer.
