What technology? there are all kinds of AC 1ph motors, Universal, shaded pole, capacitor start, PCM (permanent cap start), if this a 1.5 hp motor 1ph induction motor the chances of reliably controlling the rpm's are relatively nil.
They do not control well under load and at low rpm.
What is the purpose behind the control?

I know one of the motors which I would use it on is a 0.5 hp cap start induction the other is on a radial arm saw all it says is "ball bearing motor"

There are extremely few manufacturers of RPM control for 1ph induction motors, mainly the ones available are only usefully for light duty, fans etc.
A simple small shaded pole motor can be controlled by a Triac style very cheaply, mainly used for ceiling fans etc.
