Sorry for the late I've been busy for a while
for the lamp it's an incandescent lamp with 12V AC
For incandescent there's no difference between AC and DC. You can rectify your AC and then PWM-switch it with a FET. It'll glow propotional to the duty cycle of the FET. It is probably the easiest way.

I agree. Less hardware and less programming impact.
