Hi guys...
So i made this orange squeezer compressor,
Instead of the required 2n5457, i used a 2n5486 transistor cuz the 5457 is hard to find.
I can say that the project is working but i aint sure if its working like it should be.
Or maybe it just turn into a booster.
I couldnt tell if there really is a compression.
What do you think guys? Is it ok to use a 5486?
Thak you so much!

There is quite a difference in the zero Vgs current between the two but, if I understand the circuit correctly, Q2 is there to offset that voltage anyway, so it should be OK.

An entirely different approach is using an audio amp chip with DC volume control. Some BTL types can be run with the 2 outputs single ended - you can use one for the signal and the other driving a charge pump for the control voltage.

The old favourite off the shelf chip was the CA3080 - nowadays its the LM13700.

View attachment 112675 I don"t know if the 2N5486 is Ok or not. But I just built an Orange Squeezer clone for someone last week.
2N5457's are available from Jameco.

A JFET that I think is made for that kind of job is the NS J111 - 113 family. Its a bit misleading as its not a 2S prefix part number (the 2SJ113 is a power device).

BTW: Do you have a PDF of the Orange Squeezer schematic?
