The science of trolling

Here's a scientific and expansive TED Talk on the topic of trolling.

Enjoy!
I need to read this as opposed to watching it. Her word choices and phrasing are much more suited to a (stilted) scientific journal than a speech. Her incessant weight shifting and toe pointing is annoying. In short, I was so put off by the delivery that I could not focus on the content.

Maybe she brought out the troll in me; perhaps that was her intent. ;)

Its a good video... I mentioned this on "another site".. Perceptions of "Trolls" differ from person to person... Trolls are only made trolls by non trolls... If you know what I mean.

If I suspect someone is trolling.... Then I don't feed the troll... If I did continue to feed it, then I may be considered a troll as well...

Its a very fine line....

Agree with Tracecom, and when she mentioned "Moral Majority", I had to laugh. Poor girl needs to get laid.:D
I'm not sure I follow. What is she saying that points out such urges?

Are you questioning that there is such a thing as a moral majority? I am the one enforcing it, right here, right now, in this site!

I found that so difficult to listen to that I'm afraid if I watch the whole thing, she's going to break out in a big grin and say, "Ha ha, trolled you".

Really. Prime example of why you're a moderator and I'm not. You must have a LOT more patience than I do.

Yes, I admit that she is hard to follow. But then again, scientific papers are a great drill for you to learn to read through unintelligible gibberish.
"Just give me the formulas, man!"

But joking aside, scientists often have to use difficult notation, just to avoid losing face in front of their peers.

Well I found the overall subject and presentations quite tolerable although she really needs to focus on wearing the right shoes for what she is doing.

High heels were not a good choice for standing on a stage and doing a lecture. Just ask my wife. She is an expert on picking the wrong footwear for the application at hand.

As an experienced Toastmaster I find her presentation very good though it did require focused attention to her vocabulary which might not be easy for the average viewer. That comes with the Toastmaster's training on how to be a good listener.

I did notice the high heel shoe shuffle but that did not distract me, again part of the Toastmasters training.

Delivering a 12-minute speech with good structure and content without the use of notes is not an easy task. I noticed her focusing on the floor ever so often but there was no evidence of a teleprompter.

Toastmasters clubs hold speech contests regularly. Judges have to be fair, unbiased and consistent in their judging. For those interested, here is the procedure for judging a speech and how I would judge Whitney Phillips’ presentation:

Content 50 points max
Delivery 30 points max
Language 20 points max

My score in [ ]

Content - Speech Development - structure, organization, support material [18]
0-8 Fair
9-13 Good
14-19 Very good
20 – Excellent

Content - Effectiveness – Achievement of purpose, interest, reception [14]
0-5 Fair
6-10 Good
11-14 Very good
15 – Excellent
(questionable interest and reception)

Content - Speech Value – Ideas, logic, original thought [14]
0-5 Fair
6-10 Good
11-14 Very good
15 – Excellent
(there is a subtle message and original thought)

Delivery – Physical – Appearance, body language, speaking area [5]
0-3 Fair
4-6 Good
7-9 Very good
10 – Excellent
(knee bending is distracting, needs to move around and use more body language)

Delivery – Voice – Flexibility, volume [6]
0-3 Fair
4-6 Good
7-9 Very good
10 - Excellent
(lacks vocal variety)

Delivery – Manner – directness, assurance, enthusiasm [6]
0-3 Fair
4-6 Good
7-9 Very good
10 - Excellent
(can show more enthusiasm)

Language – Appropriateness – to speech purpose and audience [8]
0-3 Fair
4-6 Good
7-9 Very good
10 - Excellent
(while the speech is sound there is questionable value to the average viewer)

Language – Correctness – Grammar, pronunciation, word selection [10]
0-3 Fair
4-6 Good
7-9 Very good
10 - Excellent
(excellent use of language and word phrases)

Total = 81 (100 max)

"Troll" is like the concept of "obscene".... nobody can accurately define it in a way that most would agree with, but everybody is 100% certain that they know it when they see it.

I'm not sure that this holds necessarily true. Taboo subjects vary from culture to culture.

I thought the same thing as 12 and agree with him. Must be regional stereotypes. Hard to explain why.

Moral majority reference here.

So I'm wondering - is trolling actually an evolutionary adaptation or simply an expression of phallocentrism?
I would think that any male that trolls most likely has deep seated emotional and psychological issues and less to do with their own conceived masculine superiority .

I believe both me and the researcher took the phrase "moral majority" literally, meaning a set of moral rules that a majority of a social group adhere to.

It's funny where there's a double reading to almost everything.
