keyboard interfacing

Hey Guys,
I have opened up a late model USB keyboard with the intentions of hooking up across Rows and Columns with external keys.
The motive behind this project - building a dedicated controller for latest Mech Warrior Merc's 5 Game.
I have previously done this - 20+ years ago when k/pads were easier and simpler.

So I wish to hook up across 22 different switches to allow my custom switches to work.
Now so far i have found what looks like 18 rows and 8 columns
when i short out across certain R's and C's columns i get a correct "Q" or "A' (example only) BUT when i connect across othe R and C i get a combination of keys ie ERU.
The keypad is after all just a bank of switches( although there does seem to be resistance associated with the "print pads"
Can anyone shine a light on this please ?
Kind regards,
Rushy
