hello...im in process of building my garage door opener...i build the hardware but now i need to control the motor speed and timing
is it possible that someone can help me with that?
the motor is windshield wiper motor and its working at 12v,but its too fast when i connect the battery.can i slow it down and mybe put some limit switches and remote control on to whole sistem
i now its not easy but i would be grateful for all the help

 

A Windshield Wiper-Motor-does not produce enough Power to open a Garage-Door reliably.
If You "Gear-it-down" with a set of Pulleys or Sprockets,
it will probably, eventually, open and close the Door,
but it will probably take at least a solid Minute of time,
maybe even more,
between being completely-opened, and completely-closed.

Check with a proper Garage-Door-Installation & Repair-Company,
and see if they have a "real" used Opener that You can have.

It's generally a bad idea to try to make your own Garage-Door-Opener.

the one i installed open and close the door without problem in power,the door is swing type
the problem is that its closed and opened too fast

 

What is the type of mechanism you are using?
It may be possible to reduce the rate mechanically

There was a project in one of the magazines (EPE?) wich used a windscreen wiper motor with a drum attached to the spindle with cables which worked a retractable garage door. It was very satisfactory. I no longer have a car nor a garage but I do still have all the parts which i would be happy to part with. I am in UK.

With a "Swinging" type Door, you can quite often get away with a smaller Motor because
there is "usually" less work to do.

But, for a Swinging-Door, the best setup is going to be a "Linear-Actuator",
there's about a million of them on-line, for cheap.

Then it comes down to getting out a Pencil and Paper and figuring-out the
best Geometry to use, for the Door itself, and for the surrounding environment, in question.

If You have no other choices,
get a strong Door-Closing-Spring, and mount it to the Door.
Then, create a Deep-Grooved-Pulley to mount to the Windshield-Wiper-Motor.
Use the Pulley to wind-up a small Steel-Cable that will pull the Door Open.
Next, You need to get creative and figure out a way to attach 2 Limit-Switches to the Door.

The Limit-Switches are the most important part of the whole project.
They must be 100% reliable.
Redundancy is a good idea, ( 4-switches ).

Normally a garage door also has obstruction detection when closing, if obstructed, it automatically reverses open.

 

A Current-Based-Electronic "Circuit-Breaker" Circuit would be a great idea.
This could save the whole project if something goes wrong.

Here are some pictures of the garage door opener. It is missing a 12V SLA battery, the solar panel for charging the battery, and the remote control transmitter (receiver is present). It also has a boost converter to charge the battery from a car power socket. It detects that something is in the way of the door by monitoring the motor current. You can see in the pictures that the motor can be swung away so the door can be opened or closed manually if there is some problem.

I don't have the original magazine article, schematic, or PCB design.

 

In my area swinging garage doors are considered to be deadly, the y kill children and adults and pets. Once in motion they are quite hard to stop.
To slow the motor without reducing the torque you can add a pulse width Modulation control to the existing direction control. With the existing relay directional control the speed control scheme can just depend on the position of the door.
