win updates, driver updates, application updates, advertising updates, sharing updates

i assume everyone has seen the movie - i, robot

hey, human, welcome to the collective
Is that what is happening when opening Win10? Win8.1 would go online almost instantly when logging in. Win10 sits there and the hard drive light flashes, the internet and usb lights on the modem flash for a second or two befor the browser is allowed to start. This is the only thing so far I don't like about Win10, all this talking behind my back, what is it talking about and to who?

I've been using using it for a couple of weeks now with all the hidden app sharing, cortana etc turned off. It loads in half the time of win 7 pro and everything is quicker except as shortbus said, it takes a few seconds longer to log into the internet due I have been told, to it checking for updates and checking to see if it is allowed to be accessed. As I have turned all the snooping off, it can't be, so continues to load my browser. If cortana and some of the settings that allow it to read your e.mails, contacts etc are on, it then takes considerably longer to load the browser. The hard drive light flashes like a pulsar, and the internet traffic light on the hub goes mental for about 15 seconds so it is obviously sending something back up the line because the upload usage monitor shows about 20mb added each time.
As I said, carefully ensure you have gone through all the settings and turned all the apps that can root around at will are turned off. Especially cortana!!!
My overall opinion is that it's ok, a little slicker than win 7 pro, and eventually, I would have to have upgraded at some point in the future anyway.

P.S, In another thread I started, whilst on win 7 I was having a problem uploading posts here, sometimes whole blocks of text were missing and I had to go back several times and insert them back in. This has not happened since the win10 upgrade.

Thanks reckless. Thought maybe it was just me. Soon, sometime in July of this year I'm told the "free" download will be up. Heard it will cost around $250US for what was "free".

Yes apparently you have until the end of July to get it for free and then here in the U.K it will be about £99.00.
I think that a lot of the negative reviews were because users did not take the time or even know that it could be configured so as to not snoop. I think that Cortana is the worst offender, and there are several somewhat hidden settings that although you turn off a function in one menu, it's on again in another. They are crafty beggars at M.S!!!!

Personally speaking, I would NOT recommend upgrading to Windows 10. The system still has some issues which need fixing and some tweaking here and there.
If you do the upgrade, you may find that certain applications may not run as expected and you may need to run the applications by running them as another Wndows version and still they may not work properly.
I upgraded my Win7 Pro 64bit system July/August 2015. I used to run many applications without any problem, then after the upgrade I had many problems. Eg. MS Flight Simulator X Gold, and Doom 3  and other applcations would not run correctly or not at all. Even after uninstalling and reinstalling using MS help and advice they would still not run properly.
I have since downgraded and everything runs as it should.
To stop the Windows 10 popup that keeps appearing you need to disable the GWX application from running in the background. You can get a GWX control panel application from here (http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/) and several other websites to stop this popup from appearing.
When MS do the fixes I may consider trying to do the upgrade but at the moment I am perfectly happy with Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

Your information is more than 6 months old. Microsoft had major issues before November 2015 and, if you look at their support pages, all comments from MS tech support acknowledge that and use this date as the cutoff of how to solve issues (big hammer or small hammer approach). Most major issues are resolved. Those that are not solved (e.g. scanner driver issues on wireless scanners from some manufacturers) have become moot points because microsoft released a virtually universal scanner app that works great.

Do you know the name of the ms scanner app? My friend has a canon printer/scanner that does not have win 10 drivers available?
