WHY DOES THIS IN LINE DIODE WORK?

The attached circuit is a retro fit installed in a child's Gator ride on toy. Yup more power!
Upgraded from 12vdc to 24vdc for drive train. Kept 12vdc for accessories.
24V is two (2) LIFePO4 batteries. 12V is provided by a 5amp solid state DC/DC convertor.
The inline diode is 1/4 of a full wave package and was installed because when the toggle switch was closed the 12v would go into some oddball state with an approx 2 vdc reading. The 12volt supply would not reset until the input to the supply was disconnected and then reconnected.
Disconnect the ESC and the 12 volt never tripped. I think back EMF so I try the flyback diode approach all over the circuit to no avail. I try it inline to the 12 volt convertor no good. The diode must be inline to the as indicated and seen by the battery.
So my question, WHY DOES THIS INLINE DIODE WORK?
Maybe my question should really ask why does the diode only work it's magic in the +24 volt line?
Looking forward to the lesson and answers.
Thanks
