I have some confusen Suppose If I want to access internet in my laptop then I have to use wifi router or (switch+ router ) but when I want to access internet in my mobile I can access internet from wifi router but I don't need to use router and switch. simply I turn on the data connection on mobile and I can access internet.

My question is that why we can't access internet without router? and why mobile is able to access internet without router?

Your PC probably has just a modem card, and you must have a service provider that brings the service in either over land-line (phone) or a dedicated cable.
Both of these require a intermediary in the form of a router to communicate.
Your mobile provider offers the equivalent feature of a router on receipt of your signal.

You can. Get a DSL modem and a DSL service. Or just get a regular modem with dialup service.

Or a cable modem

And mobile devices can't access the internet without a router. Not sure where you got that. They need wifi. A router provides wifi.

This is pretty basic stuff.

Hi

A router is the device that stores the IP address that the internet service provider assigns you when you subscribe. It represents your “home” IP address to the rest of the internet.

A router is always being used to access the internet. It makes no difference if a mobile device is used or wifi is used.

why your mobile phone cannot access anything without network grid of your telecom?
somewhere inside that grid is another router...

What does "access internet in my mobile," mean? Are you using the same laptop? Or are you using a cell phone? Are you using both?

Where I live it works a little different. A router does NOT connect to the internet. A router needs an internet connection supplied to it. This is the input cat connection on the router. The connection to the internet is made with a modem. The internet provider will give you one identifying address......to your modem. The router will network several computers to that modem address. A router can also have a wifi transceiver and network multiple wifi connections, within range. My wifi router is at waist level and far back in the house. I can pick up about 20 other wifi signals. Several are businesses and allow guest logon.

I don't have a cell phone. But my guests do....and I give them my wifi password.....and they can use their cell thru my wifi. I'm quite sure there are apps that can log on businesses quest wifi. My laptops here can logon guest and not use my ISP. I haven't tried all the private wifi routers. Some will allow guest at times.....like a party or such. And some forget to secure their wifi connections. Have someone drive you around while you look for connections from your laptop wifi transceiver. Depending where you live and go.....you can find thousands of connections. But your wifi connect has to go thru a router. You can connect ONE computer to the modem. The software on the OS might pass thru other connections......but have to go thru your ONE computer to modem.

If your ISP provides a RJ45 WAN connection, you don't need any Router / Switch. You can directly connect the Laptop / Computer to that terminal. If the Internet connection is on a Coaxial / Optical Fibre / Telephone Pair, you need an Interface Unit to connect to a computer.

A Router comes into play when you need to connect more than 1 unit to access thye same Internet account.

A bunch of stuff is wrong with this thread, but it's close enough.

You generally have switches, routers, access points, and media converters. "They" have combined the functionality of these devices so their functions blur.

A DSL or cable modem is really a media converter; a FAX modem is a FAX modem.

Routers route traffic between network segments. Access points allow you to "plug in" call it Wifi, RJ45 connection, fiber.

You need to look at the OSI model https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_model to get a better idea of the Internet.

In DSL, my IP address resides many many miles (around 40) away from me because, the segment consists of an ethernet segment at home, a telco DSL segment to the DSLAM, ATM transport through the digital telephone networks and then assigned an IP address. ATM: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asynchronous_Transfer_Mode

It is a router to touter connection, but the routers are my ISP providers (located 40 miles from me) and my router that allows access to my non-routeable segment). At one point I had that segment go over the power line on my doing.

When I take my DSL modem out of BRIDGE mode, it becomes a router and media converter. It may become a switch and an access point too. Blurrr.

Hey, I agree with you entirely. Some guy here, https://serverfault.com/questions/11807/whats-the-difference-between-a-switch-a-router-and-a-modem thinks it acts like media converter too.

That was my point, it's functionality with respect to the transport of data.
Hi

Somehow this thread got off subject...

The TS asked "My question is that why we can't access internet without router? and why mobile is able to access internet without router?"

There is always a router between the client device and the internet. It doesn't matter whether the client device is accessing the internet through a cellular network, WIFI, DSL, ISDN or whatever. The correct answers are in post #5, #8, and #9. The router may not be on premise (in your house for example) but its in the data path and permits the client device to connect to the internet.

I don't think any of this is what he is looking for the celphone is Ip based each phone has it's owe mac address 4g lte can do more then just talk to bobs router if bob down it finds bills that ones out it finds someone else.
It's way more then the old days.
So to be fair here It needs only a way to get to the web.

I think what he is looking for is how can he use his phone as hotspot.
The phone becomes a router letting you get to web thew it how it get's you there is up to what your phone finds for you.
4g lte is a layer to the web we don't make call's like we did year's ago these new phone with lte are smart that's where there speed come's
from they hunt out the fastest way to get you where your going something broke they fix it.
It's amazing how they work.

Sorry for late response, I was too busy to fix some other issues

I try to explain what is my confusion. Let suppose you bought only one laptop and mobile. Now if you want to use internet in your mobile then you have to active data plan's on your sim card.simply you pay some money to use internet to your ISP provider. Now you can use internet in your mobile from anywhere. You don't need to buy router to use internet in your mobile

let's suppose you want to use internet in your laptop. you have to buy wifi dongal or wifi router. Without it you can't access internet in your router

My question was , what is in the mobile phone so that we do not need to buy router to use internet. why can't do this with computer.

You can get laptops with card in them or one of these
NETGEAR 4G LTE Modem with Two Gigabit Ethernet Ports – Instant Broadband Connection and Automatic 4G LTE/3G Backup (LB2120)

Because your mobile phone connects to a cell tower where there is hardware to get you connected to the internet. Why do you think your mobile phone is also called a cell phone. If you wanted to use wifi at your home then you would need a router.

How is it possible that you do not know this? Aren't you an engineering school graduate?
