Why are amps increasing when joining two Ni-MH 1.2v batteries in series?

Using a multimeter I have been playing around with two 1.2v batteries to learn about batteries in series and parallel configurations .
My understanding is that when two identical batteries are placed in a series , the voltage should double and the amps should remain the same. However, I must be missing something because when I join two batteries in series (see pics below) my multimeter says the amps have increased. Could someone please explain what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

Ok, I've got it now. Thanks for the link.

I was confusing amp hours (battery capacity) with amps.
It's the amp hours that are maintained when in series... not the amps.
