It's my dream to build a colour tablet of its same exact dimensions and read on it...

Initially no batteries needed. I am not planning to carry it with me for the initial versions of it, if not feasible. Thanks for reading Guys!

 

The cost of the tablet will far exceed the cost of the print edition, even before the digital subscription.

If you want to make the tablet, then don't use the cost of the subscription as an excuse—it's not logical.

An HDMI capable display panel and a Raspberry PI Zero W would be most of what you need to do the job.

The HDMI touch screen panel is about $46.00 USD

The RPi is abut $25.00 USD

Obviously, these are US prices, YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary, a strange American-derived Internetism). You can run Linux on the RPi, so that is free. You need to make a case, and buy the digital subscription.

So you are looking at around 10000 INR all said and done. But, if you get value from it, and you have the money, there is no reason to try to justify it by saving 500 INR (or whatever it is). Just do it.

Hi Ya'akov. Thanks for the reply. Buttons are okay for page turns. No HD screen is required but a decent dpi (Dots per inch) is enough. Even I am ready for a black and white screen (or a monochrome if it slashes the price by heavy percentiles). 5000 INR? Possible?

I am sure you can buy a cheap tablet for less money than building your own. And you could pay for it by doing whatever the Indian equivalent of “flipping burgers” is for fewer hours than you would put into building it.

That's about what you should be able to buy a used Android tablet for.

I have had great success with slightly obsolete used computers. Of course, some have been much more used than others, and used "much harder" than others. This one is OK, except for the batteries, which will not power it for even a second. All I had to do was completly reload the software including the operating system. Four good years of working, so far. It is quite obsolete, but since all of my software is also old, that is OK. Of course I never have games on it, so speed does not matter much.
