Just curious to know what kind of this oscillator? and Why use this?

Interesting, never seen these before. Wonder why this package.

 

A long crystal often runs at 32768hz. That divides down to 1hz. Used in clocks.

I can understand the 32KHz part, I was asking why this package. Maybe I am over thinking about it, just another 32KHz crystal.

 

This plastic housing can be fitted automatically.

I've also seen 32768Hz Clock Crystals, in a shrunken version of the house type like the X1 in the picture.

 

Package could easily be an SMD oscillator chip.

 

32768 Hz "crystals" are in reality tuning forks, which a significant larger L/W aspect ratio than a crystal

Looking at the images at the Digikey website, I found several devices which appear identical the the one on your photo.
