When a part is marked with L, it is usualy an inductor / coil.

An inductor. Photo is cropped too closely; looks like L10 to me...

 

And looks like a coil to me.

 

EDIT - mistyped; 10 mH, not 1 mH; there is a small chance the marking is in nanohenries and the value is 10 µH, but that would be contrary to usual marking practice
10 x 10^3 micorhenries = 10 mH, ±5% ("J") tolerance inductor

I can't tell how the core is made from the photo. It looks like a "shielded" type where there is a sort of cup that encloses the winding which is made on a separate part. The core will almost certainly be ferrite of some sort. Give the inductance and physical size, it will likely be rated for only a few tens of milliamperes.
