What is this? Looks like Kapton material, not tape

I'm sorry to hear that you are forgetting about work after 9-years. I was hoping that, when I retire, I would forget about work by the time I leave the parking lot. 9-yeas is sad.
Truthfully I forgot most stuff as I walked out the gate and turned in my ID. :) We also got the usual debrief as to we know nothing. While I did enjoy those years given a choice I'll take retired as wife and I have come to enjoy it. Thinking about it Nomex came to mind exactly as mentioned, it was like a thick paper insulating material used in the motors but my work was not building the motors. :)

When your time comes, enjoy retirement as it really is nice.

Uh Oh, yes, thinking back it was a paper. Been retired too long and we used Nomex and yes, it was like a thick paper. My bad and thanks for pointing that out.

Other than Kapton Tape there is also just plain Kapton Film. That could be it. Going on 9 years into retirement and can't remember what I worked with. Getting pretty sad here. :)

So Kapton Tape is merely film that is slit into narrower widths. Grades normally 100HN and 200HN

You also get self adhesive tape which is the 100HN film with a tacky adhesive on one side.

Then you get Kapton tape for covering conductors the ones we used at the time were 150FN019 and 150FN919 and I believe 200FN019. This had an FEP coating which would fuse the Kapton tape to copper conductor, this was done through high frequency heating of the copper which briefly melted and fuse the FEP coating.

Our company had a very specific requirement for a water resistant Kapton and we spent many hours with DuPont developing the water resist grade. We were very proud of our not insignificant contribution. DuPont would change the formulation and we would cover the conductor and put it into motors and test and provide feedback and the process would continue until we got it right.

We also had a part in the Corona resistant grade as at our altitudes Corona inception was circa 3kV. Our railway traction motors we running off 3.3kV. The polymer has a filler to achieve this.

We also helped develop a magnet wire overcoat. When VSD drives first became available the electronics would generate some real nasty wave forms that would lead to the puncturing the insulation resulting in faults.

The best times of my career, being in the electric motor and transformer industry.
