It generates a voltage based on the intensity of light striking it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photodiode if the arrows on the diode were pointing away from the diode it would be an LED and the lower one is a Bipolar Junction Transistor. looks like an NPN (not pointing in) as opposed to a PNP (pointing in).
