Hi, I read in the book that

where
P is the polarization vector
E is the electric field intensity
and D is the displacement vector.
this eqn can be transformed to D=εE

My problem is what does this D or displacement vector mean i.e. what is its significance??
again in free space ,the electric displacement field is equivalent to flux density (from Wikipedia). So what relationship or difference exists between D and flux density???

thanks in advance to you all:)
