In Arduino Speak what does Arduino Shield mean? And what does breakout board mean?
thanks
Shields are boards that can be plugged on top of the Arduino PCB. Breakout boards. Many components may be hard to connect to. Like many SMD chips. By using a breakout board. You can distribute the connections so they may be more easy to connect without being an expert solder. As an example this one. The board contain a pre mounted PIC chip. And hobbyist friendly solder connections

Arduino's original designer simply decided to refer to the boards that plug onto the main microcontroller board (Arduino Uno or Arduino Mega256) as shields.
