What compiler do I need if I want to program in C for PIC16F877 ?

I have 2 PIC programming books, in both books the code for PIC16F877 is in ASM, and the code that is in C is for other PICs (PIC18 or PIC24)

Unfortunately pic does not seem as poor person friendly as atmega

 

For the PIC16F877 the CSS C Compiler is the most common that I have seen. Sadly, its pay for, but they do provide an option for a 30 day demo with 2k program limit - not the best but it should give you an idea if it is a suitable option: http://www.ccsinfo.com/demopoll.php
