DragonFire is a laser-directed energy weapon (LDEW) with an operating cost of less than £10 ($13) per shot, making it much cheaper than conventional missiles. It is designed as a line-of-sight system with a classified range. Firing it for 10 seconds is equivalent to using a heater for an hour. It could be a long-term alternative for some air defense tasks that rely on expensive ammunition.

Back in 2003 I worked for an agency that built such a thing. Still not allowed to talk about it, but then again nobody will likely go out of their way to tell me it's OK to talk about. But yeah, us Yanks have been developing the same thing. Heck, there might even be a YouTube on it by now.

The amphibious transport dock Portland fires a laser weapon at a target floating in the Gulf of Aden on Dec. 14, 2021. (Staff Sgt. Donald Holbert/U.S. Marine Corps)

Everyone likes the lasers because they look cool in movies and demos, until your life depends on it. That's when you press the missile/bullet button instead of laser.

"Indeed, a ship’s captain must be free to use whichever weapons keep the ship and crew safe, multiple retired surface warfare officers told Navy Times."
