Here is the version I used,.
It uses a bridge before the motor to drive it with DC.
I went down to very low rpm for a band saw.

It was already on the TM motor so I don't have any details from it as I recently sold the Saw, but it was around a 8p/rev magnetic based inductive pick up.
It shouldn't be hard to set up a slot opto type.

Most appear to use just contact closure from pin8 & pin12.
with a ~3k series resistor, it looks like it may be tricky to integrate an opto given the input pin Vmax.

Did you mean like in the attachment?

 

That may work but the current supplied from p12 is very low.
