Using capacitance to measure speed of approach

I am trying to electronically replicate a musical instrument wherein if I touch a piece of metal, I produce the sound of the actual musical instrument. But I need to find the force with which I hit the metal so that a volume corresponding to the force is produced through the speakers. Is there any way in which I can find the force with which the metal is being hit , before it is actually hit? For example, by measuring the rate of change of capacitance as our hand approaches the metal? What sort of filtering is required if that is possible?

Thanks
