Hello,

I have a small portable hard drive that I travel with and the 110v adapter that it came with is quite large. I'm looking for a USB step up adapter with the following:

Input 100 - 240V ~ 50-60Hz 0.8A

Output: 12.0V DC 2000mA

Center positive

The DC adapter must be 2.1mm x 5.5mm

Please see photo of the 110V adapter below.

Thanks for any help finding a USB adapter that will work!IMG_3157.JPG

It may be worth while getting another HD as there are quite a few now that are USB powered.
I have a Toshiba DTP110 1TB that runs on the USB with no extra power required.

Thanks...I have a specific need where I require a direct transfer of photo files from SD card to HD without use of a laptop or other external device. There are only a very few HDs that meet that need.

You say the input must be 100-240VAC and the output 12V. Why do you call that a step-up? If you are looking for a smaller version of the power supply you showed an image of, that is a step-down power supply. Its input is from the high AC voltage mains and the output is 12VDC via a cable with a 2.1mm dia plug (or socket) and it has nothing to do with USB directly...although it may very well power a HD that has a separate USB connection.

Sorry, I guess I made a mistake. Not step-up.

I want a smaller version of the power supply shown, preferably one that I can plug into a USB outlet

That makes no sense. A smaller version of what you have would plug into line voltage, not a USB outlet, which is 5V.

Which is it that you want?

I'm obviously not an electrician and I'm not sure I'm getting across what I'm looking for. The above pictured adapter is quite large and heavy and difficult to travel with.

Is there a smaller version of this type of adapter? I would prefer a USB connection on the "input" side, but if that's not a thing, then is there simply a smaller, more compact version of this adapter with the appropriate output of 12V / 2000mA ? Is there one that perhaps has foldable prongs?

(I don't know where I got the 5V thing from. I think I was trying to find something that would plug into an iPhone type outlet adapter and then upconvert to 12V)

Thanks

OK, now I understand that you want to replace the power supply you showed with a physically smaller version having the same power capability. I do not think you will find a standard power supply of 12V with a USB connector; that would be very confusing (and damaging) since USB is so strongly associated with 5V, not 12V. However, you could yourself attach a USB connector...but I strongly advise against that. Stick with the 2.1mm plug. I cannot give you a part number but if you review what is available via ebay, Amazon, Jameco, etc, there is a very good chance of finding a smaller unit; smaller has been a trend for some years now.

Great, thanks!

The problem with that us that a USB power jack would have to produce over 5A to output 12V at 2A. The USB standard is 1/10 of that. And fast charging adapters typically supply 2A.

Yes, that would work, though the plug on it may or may not be right, and you might have to replace it.

But is it any smaller and lighter than what you have?

Make a trip to the goodwill they have small 12 switching supply's all the time
for about nothing I get 2 or so every time I'm there.
as a matter of fact I use one for a harddrive That I lost the old supply in moving.
