They are seldom used anymore, although a variation call a back diode is sometimes used as a low level microwave frequency detector.

I am interested in using the tunnel diode to demonstrate its behavior in LTspice, followed by a more in-depth explanation of its quantum-mechanical behavior. Sorry for the delay; I ran into some setbacks in getting back to this topic.
