There is always the old crystal radio method, which is simplicity itself, but very inefficient.

A better way is superhetrodyne. I would suggest you Google and also use Wikipedia on that keyword.

Put an LC tank at the collector of a common emitter amplifier, no resister. That gives you amplification and a tuned circuit. But there is much more to do when building a standard AM radio. The best way is to make a superheterodyne receiver. Google the web for the explanation. Try wikipedia.

 

howstuffworks dot com has a nice introductory explanation of the tank circuit. Right at the moment I don't remember how you make a basic a.m. receiver out of that. I'll go look it up.

Actually, the best of both worlds would be a regenerative receiver....incredible sensitivity AND simplicity.
