Transformers- When are they useful?

You can generally treat AC the same as DC if the voltage is expressed as RMS and the load is resistive (no significant capacitive or inductive reactance at the AC frequency).

I'm still not sure if I'm on the right track with my fundamentals of a transformer. Barring any technical reality, like transformer burnout before reaching that 1440W figure I calculated earlier, were those calculations and conceptual ideas correct? I realize the technicalities exist, but foundations first. There's just so much to learn!
