I have a few small transformers, removed from plasma TVs old chargers etc. They have no markings on them. I was looking to use one to step down main AC to something small like 12v to work with.
Since they have no markings I dont know which way to connect them.
Is there anyway to test it?
I was also wondering if I connected it backwards would it insanely step up the voltage and fry me?!

No, if these are from inverters they won't work on 50/60 Hz mains, they are designed for Higher Frequency.
