I keep a cheap Bluetooth OBDII Car Diagnostic Scanner plugged in all the time on an older car so I can pull codes with the cell-phone.

 

I plug my cheapo module in about once a year to make sure the CEL is still only on for a fuel evap issue. 12 years and counting with it active…

Mine uses local wifi.
