This is an interesting topic because we can relate this to language, the "Language of the Resistors".
There is a sort of language of the resistors because they have an orderly group of colors that do not appear to be random, just like letters in a word are not random. This means we can learn the language of the resistors just like we learn another language.
For example, here are some commonly used resistor values:
1.2k, 2.2k, 3.3k, 4.7, 10k, 33k, 47k, 68k, 100k, 1meg.
If you think about this (although there are more than above) you start to see each resistor become a "word" of the language and the colors are the "letters" of the language. Just like we dont have to repeatedly spell out every word we say verbally, we dont have to spell out every resistor color by color, and we dont have to 'hear' every resistor color by color, we just read it like a word, not just a series of colors. We being to see the resistors as having a character of their own, which in this analogy is the 'word'.
So when we see a 2.2k resistor, we dont really see red, red, red, just as when we see the word "see" we dont really see "s-e-e" we see the whole word all at once almost.
This happens after using color coded resistors on a daily basis, especially when we use a limited set of values over and over again. In a way we start to see "Mr. 2.2k", and "Mr. 3.3k", and "Mr. 4.7k", almost like each one is a complete and separate entity of it's own. This is possible in part because we dont have every possible combination of colors, just certain ones, for say the 5 percent resistors.
