Animals just seem to know when humans are in distress as well as knowing when their own are in distress. When we had our Golden spayed they also did surgery to pin her stomach. Goldens have a sort of free floated stomach which can twist. We figured as long as she is down may as well get the stomach done too. When she came home she was placed on a couch. Biscuit our mixed breed laid beside her on the floor the whole time, occasionally giving her a sniff test. When either my wife or I are not feeling well the dogs always lay beside us as if to comfort us. I have seen plenty of cats belonging to friends do the same. They just know. Piran is a great example.

I beg to differ! The behavior of your pets your loved ones, you have just described is an anthropomorphic observation,
It is a lovely sentiment. Nothing more! It is as beautiful & as cold as the universe itself.
I know from personal experience & I agree with you! wholeheartedly!
But it is the only acceptable explanation scientifically to keep me from going insane!!!

ButterScotch Passed this morning. I was reading as usual she was in her favorite spot, 4 small coughs seemed a little unusual but, it was dark and she was cuddled next to me, quietly passing peacefully. She is pictured here with her Sister Omega, Black and White, I put her to sleep 2 years ago.

Sorry for your loss. The day we let them into our lives we know the day we say goodbye will come. I like to focus on all of the joy and unconditional love they brought us during their living years. They do live on holding a special place in our hearts forever.

13 years ago I spied a little 3 month old kitten living under the dumpster at work. I gave her some food by putting it down and backing away for her. After a few days she almost came to be, but stopped 10 feet away, meowing all the time. A coworker brought in a have-a-heart trap which we used to catch her and I brought her home that night. I set up a quarantine cage with begging litter box, food & water, and even a toy cheeseburger.

We named her Sweetie Girl, though the sweetness part soon waned. Learned quickly to only pet her head. At least, in only a few years, she learned she need not draw blood when we did something she did not like.

Always adventurous she would once or twice a year dart out the side door sometimes for days. I eventually knew her pattern, where she would go behind the neighbors house, and that she would make her own way back but on her own terms in the quiet of the night. I would sit outside and wait for her and soon she would come back to me.

As my very first kitty she was always very special to me, and I to her as she would only come to me when she needed something.

Late last month she stopped eating and when I picked her up (risky but I had to) I was surprised how tiny she had become. Got her to the vet the next day hoping it was a hairball, but her kidneys had failed. My vet suggested several things we could do until I asked him "if this was your pet, would you think it was her time" and he said it was.

He kept her for another day to "pump her up" with IV fluids and I brought her home on a Friday night. My kittens all now stay in our bedroom (wife got us two unnecessary puppies) and that is where I spent that weekend to see to her every need. She liked ice in her water dish and that weekend she had ice every time. A fresh can of food was opened if she even went near the food dishes, but mostly she sat on a kitty bed on a table next to me.I got to share some of my cheese burger with her too.

On the drive to the vet I held her to my chest and she saw so much more of the world than she ever did, looking out wide eyed at so many new things.

I took her home with me and she rests now under a heart shaped pile of stones. She was truly a gift from God to me.

Pictures: First day, Christmas time, and my last morning with her.

I’m sorry for your loss, I‘m now filling in dirt after preparing a tomb for Butterscotch, I didn’t realize your little girl passed so recently.

She looks so pretty, Ghostly in color. Funny I want to think Butterscotch is around moving about, taking pleasure still here on my property.

It will be sometime before I move past my feelings, but will have a treasure of memories when I see her little unmarked tomb I made for her.

My Grandkids Rapped the body like a mummy and I placed her. Here is a pic:

She will surely be missed by all who knew her.

We have 5 cats in my Wife's "secret garden". I usually find myself talking to them whenever I'm in that area. We've all experienced their presence from time to time. Gone but not forgotten...

We bury them 3 feet down to prevent predators from digging them up.

Good Butterscotch, now she rests in peace. Sorry for your loss too.

I too wrapped my kitty in fresh 100% cotton pillow cases thanks to BB&B. I kept her collar and bell, placed high on the cat tree. From time to time I will flick it to hear her moving once more.

Reminds me of a friend and neighbor. Recently Bobby has been minding his daughter's dog quite a bit. Remy is a Golden Doodle and a fair sized dog. So several times a day when Bobby is off work he walks Remy which is more like Remy walking Bobby. When I see them coming up the street I grab a few dog treats and go out to visit Remy who now knows I always have treats for him. Remy literally drags Bobby up and down the street. Meanwhile Pilgrim one of our two sits in the front window getting mad because he figures I am giving Remy what he views as his stuff. :)

Yesterday my 100lb black lab mix/mutt Walter, who never leaves the yard (invisible fence) ran out of the yard and jumped into the Amazon delivery guy's van while he was delivering a package to the neighbor. Amazon guy runs back to the truck, gets in not knowing Walter is inside, then half a second later bolts out like the van was about to blow up, hit the ground for only one step or less, and lept onto the hood/windshield like an Olympian. He must have clung there on the front of that van with some kind of Spiderman/Goatman powers, as it does not seem humanly possible to maintain position on a slope like that.

I didn't see it myself; That was my reconstruction of events as was told to me in overlapping excited story fragments by my kids and their friends all at once. They were pursuing Walter and yelling for him to come back, yelling to warn Amazon guy, but he had headphones in. My wife had to go inside the Amazon van to get him out. Only after he was inside the house did Amazon guy come down off the front of the van.

I have no idea what that was all about. He is a very well behaved dog, and absolutely not the kind of personality type to jump in a stranger's van. Maybe there was a squirrel or a raccoon inside? Those two varmints are the only things I've ever seen cause him to break character. Amazon guy was never in any real danger, but I realize he didn't know that, still doesn't, and that scare probably took a year off his life. I'm very sorry, Amazon guy, wherever you are. Even more sorry for laughing every time I think about it.

Sounds like our Amazon and FedEx guys. Jack is a 2 year old black lab that can't figure out why they won't play with him when they come to visit. FedEx didn't even come on the property the other day and simply dropped the package outside the fence near the driveway. One guy couldn't make it back to his truck and climbed on top of one of our cars.

That was priceless. Thanks for sharing. Pilgrim barks from the window at anything and everything. When FedEx delivers their Chewy stuff the guys have gotten to know him and wave to him. Funny part is while Pilgrim who will be a two year old soon is doing his antics Charlotte a 4 year old Golden just looks at him as if to say "you're and idiot" .
