LOL ... I can't believe I got it and laughed at it the first time I heard it ... and English is not even my birth language! :D
I think the key is the "heard it" as opposed to "read it".

When I read, I don't sound out the words in my mind too much, so rhyming words don't stand out for me when I read something the way they do when I hear it spoken a loud.
