I think the key is the "heard it" as opposed to "read it".

When I read, I don't sound out the words in my mind too much, so rhyming words don't stand out for me when I read something the way they do when I hear it spoken a loud.

 

Us old folk surely remember the song "The Name Game". Chuck was one you couldn't use because; well, here's how it goes:
