Maybe it's a setting I screwed up but my task bar above the text block is light shaded?



I can attach files as I have but can't insert a link or image as can be seen? What's up with that?

See the gear on the right of the task bar? Click it and see the change.

You accidentally clicked on it and entered view mode. Click it again to enable the tools.

“View mode” (I hope I’ve got the correct term) displays any underlying HTML and formatting codes, but disables the tools on the task bar.
