Trying to plan a hopefully simple diy radio.
This chip is very cheap, but the data sheet is lacking in details for someone new to RF.

1. for the tuning circuits, the test circuit shows variable capacitors, that dont appear to be very available, it also doesnt give any indication of values. I gather from research i should probably use a varactor for the variable capacitance, but i'm not sure how to determine the value? Also the parallel capacitors and inductors dont have values.

2. The items that connect to pins 3, 4, 7, 8, and 10. Appear to be crystals, but searching for circuits using this chip they seem to be either crystals, ceramic resonators, or ceramic filters. The part numbers referenced in this data sheet appear to be obsolete and not available. What are these?

I'm attracted to this chip because 1. its very cheap, and 2. its in a through hole dip package. Should I consider a more modern IC instead?

What values for the parallel capacitors and varicaps? These are tuneing filters, are they bandpass filters?
