The ADC uses a comparitor internally. The external voltage drives a current through a resistor, and that current is finally matched by a current of opposite sign controlled by the electronics inside the ADC. The internal current usually comes from an R - 2R ladder, and increases in steps until the comparitor indicates either a balance or overrange. The current steps are the switched current part of the ADC.
